Step 2 - How are those ideas developed? You can consider how an idea is developed by explaining it from the beginning, through the middle and to the end.
Consider the above picture when contrasted to the garage below. The idea of community is developed through the game of chess. In the first scene, the club are chaotic (below) ; in the picture above, they are working together as a team and the atmosphere is very much more relaxed. In the last picture (below right) although clearly nervous, they are ready united and ready for 'battle'. In each of the three pictures, you could explain the 'development' or change from a poor situation to a better one. |
EXAMPLE QUESTION ONE
Analyse a key idea in the film. How is the key idea developed? What links with the world can you identify? Step 1 - List of IdeasBattles - the chess board is symbolic of the battle between Ariki and Genesis for Mana's future.
Community - Genesis helps the community to become part of it. He is the catalyst that brings them all together. Learning - The characters are learning chess but many of them learn about each other or about themselves. |
Step 3 - Think of links to yourself and the world
BATTLES Where in the world are battles taking place? Are they strategic? What is likely to be the prize (as Mana is the 'prize' in the battle between Genesis and Ariki).
COMMUNITY What do you know about community? Are you a member of a team? Does a team work better than you alone? Are you stronger when united?
EDUCATION What do you know about education? Have you experienced the chaos that is first presented in the garage? Can there be a joy in learning (2nd picture)? Does education prepare you for life's challenges? (as shown in the 3rd picture)
