Thinking About the Film...
1) What is the director's purpose in making the film?
a) Write down one message that you think is put across in this film. Make it a full sentence and add detail so it is clear.
b) Write down one specific scene that you think helps to show this theme. Include the who, when and where.
c) Write down one film technique that was used in that scene and use adjectives.
d) Write down how that scene made you feel or what it made you think when you first watched it.
2) What societal view of gangs AND poverty are portrayed in the film?
a) Write down one sentence that includes the words "society's view" to show your thoughts
b) Write down your views on gangs and your views on poverty
c) Write down the views of another person in the room on gangs and on poverty
3) Describe Genesis or Mana's personality in terms of how it develops throughout the film. If you want to use these prompts: i) at the outset of the film ii) later on in the film iii) towards the end of the film.
EXAMPLE (based on PANTS ON FIRE)
At the outset of the film, the girl is presented as vulnerable and hopeless. In the middle of the film, she is shown to be a romantic and happy woman. By the end, she is exposed as an arsonist and we see her as a naive and dangerous person who has difficulty controlling her impulses. This character trait eventually results in her losing her loved one who she so desperately admires.
4) Describe a moment of tension in the film. In your description, include details of the techniques that were used to create this tension. (Tension
is defined as mental or emotional strain and is something that film directors work towards creating to make the film exciting to watch.)
5) Choose one element of symbolism in the film and analyse it as per the example below

5) Choose one element of symbolism in the film and analyse it as per the example below
Dark
This word refers to the black colour of the chess piece. However, the word 'dark' also has lots of meanings. Usually, dark is a way to describe the light at nighttime. Nighttime is linked with suspicious events and it is less safe to be outside. A dark situation suggests the need to be cautious. It also is suggestive of Genesis' illness because another phrase for depression is 'black dog' coined by Samuel Johnson in 1780. |
Horse
A horse is a majestic animal and this is how Genesis is perceived by Noble who awards him the King piece. Historically in battles, the army with the best horsepower would win. This is linked to the plot because a battle takes place for Mana's future and in the end, Genesis wins as he used to win his chess competitions. A horse is a 'driving force' and so is Genesis. |
6) Describe the lighting in each of the the film locations. Ensure you use adjectives. Try to extend the meaning of the lighting used to explain
what is going on. Eg. Dark, shadowy lighting suggests secret and bad things are occuring.
7) A lot of the action shots in the film are from inside a vehicle. Explain whether you agree with the following statement.
Vehicles are used as a symbolic representation of change. Each time Genesis travels, something changes for him or around him.
Explain with specific reference to several scenes.
8) How does the director use film techniques to expose relationships in the film. Explain using examples of film techniques in at least two
scenes.
