IceThe ice represents a frozen situation and the heat is causing the ice to melt. The situation between Daisy and Gatsby has been frozen, just as Tom's traditional values represent a 'frozen' society that will not shift. The melting of the ice suggests that the situation is changing and the argument between Tom and Gatsby is metaphorically 'heating up'! Gatsby's crude attempts to become part of the 'old money' establishment can be compared to the harsh stabbing of the ice, as his 'pink suit' indicates his freshness to the upper class scene and somewhat discloses his lower class upbringing.
