One conflict is between Skeeter and Hilly. They disagree about whether black people should be allowed to use the same toilets as white people. Hilly is promoting enforcement of a law on this subject but Skeeter disagrees. Hilly pressurizes Skeeter to publish something in the newspaper. However, Skeeter changes Hilly's words to "drop old commodes at my house" which results in Hilly's public humiliation. The film cuts to a wide shot revealing to the audience lots of people staring and many toilets parked on Hilly's lawn. Earlier the director included a close up of a sign saying "Lawn of the month" and this illustrates Hilly's pride in herself and her property. Skeeter would have known this and anticipated that she would get really upset at the act. Skeeter's opinion was that anyone should have the right to use a toilet. Whereas Hilly considered blacks to be like animals and that they were diseased. Their disagreement is essentially about human rights. Hilly was promoting her view of human rights which was opposite to Skeeter's. Their different opinions culminated in this very public disagreement.
