Each aspect of miss en scene has hidden meanings and sends signals to the audience about how to feel at different points of the film. Use your knowledge of this film term to explain to the examiner your in depth understanding of these film techniques.
For example, in the shot above, you can read from the location the following points:
SETTING:- The scene is set on a beach somewhere. Although the weather is hot, it is not really hot. We know this because the girls are only paddling their feet in the water and not swimming and the men are wearing hats to protect their heads from the sunlight.
A noticeable PROP is the wigwam of sticks made out of driftwood found on the beach. This suggests that the group are planning to have a fire later perhaps, or it is symbolic in some way. This prop ties the people together suggesting they are a family or tribe associated with the 'wigwam' just like a native American indian group.
COSTUME: - The costumes worn by the actors in this set also contribute to the creation of a beachside scene. The men are wearing hats which are quite stylish and not just sun hats, although the clothing is fairly casual. From this we can deduce that it is a modern set.
ACTING & BODY LANGUAGE:- Generally all the actors show relaxed body language. The women seem deep in conversation and some of them have strong opinions. Notice the girls with their hands on their hips, whilst one is somewhat separated from the group. Meanwhile, to the right of the frame, some people are walking away.
LIGHTING & COLOUR:- Whilst the lighting is very bright, suggesting a happy summer's day, there are strong shadows, suggesting an undercurrent of dark events occuring.
POSITIONING:- The girls are mostly separated from the boys. This distinct positioning would suggest that the director wanted to highlight a gender divide. Strangely, it is the women who are being active whilst the men are resting, when usually the men are considered to be active.
