Shot Sequences
definition
The order in which the shots are put together to help convey a story through moving pictures.
director's intention
The way a director cuts the shots together and sequences the order of them is designed to help tell the story and manipulate the viewer's opinion and mood at the same time.
example
In this sequence of shots, we see Ariki framed on his 'throne' which is a broken down armchair that is falling to pieces in a decrepit garden made out of broken timber and corrugated iron.
Secondly he reaches out to shake his brother's hand and in a rapid act of betrayal he is not offering a hand of support but rather is paying off his brother, like a paid employee whom he no longer needs.
In the third frame, an over the shoulder shot is used to show Ariki dragging on his cigarette. He is framed past Genesis's head and shoulder so we get to see him just as Genesis does, dominated by his smoking addiction.
Finally, the view cuts back to the hurt and shock on Genesis's face as the true reality of his situation sinks in. He is completely incredulous of his own brother's act of rejection.
